This was then when humankind had hoped desperately that it was all just a terrible nightmare. Shutters came down, hospitals reached breaking point, and livelihoods dwindled or were lost, death was everywhere. The vibrant city of Bangalore, fell eerily silent, broken only by the haunting sound of ambulances racing through the empty streets. For almost 30 months, the entire globe was gripped by fear and uncertainty, waiting for a glimmer of hope to save humanity. Sadly, our family was not spared from this ordeal, and we experienced a devastating personal tragedy.
During this tumultuous time, ZUN transformed into a 24/7 answering service, extending its reach to coordinate, procure, and deliver crucial support to those in desperate need. Leveraging our social, professional, and community networks, we were able to secure 50 oxygen concentrators as a generous donation from IMI , USA and in close collaboration with ICCI and the Joint Action Committee.
As the trustee, spearheading our pandemic relief work, I took the initiative to form the JAC (Joint Assistance Committee) in collaboration with like-minded individuals from the community. This dedicated team worked tirelessly to reach out to those who lacked the means to access essential medical aid.
Together, we collaborated with the ICCI (Imamia Chamber of Commerce and Industry) to procure much-needed oxygen cylinders from Mumbai, ensuring that no one was left behind in the battle against the virus.
Drawing upon the strength of our connections, we tapped into the PharmaLeaf network to secure beds and essential medical assistance.. We were determined to provide solace and support to those struck by tragedy, establishing a neighbourhood watch team with the neighbours in and around our area. To protect the community from the virus’s relentless spread, we were able to procure and distribute masks in bulk across the neighbourhood. We also made sure that the police personnel manning checkpoints received food and sustenance during their demanding duty hours.
Our collective efforts, combined with the immense support from the patrons of ZUN Foundation and our extended network, enabled us to raise substantial funds. We assembled sustenance packages containing food and other essential supplies, which were distributed in the city and surrounding areas. It was heartening to witness the unwavering solidarity of individuals coming together to uplift and support one another in these trying times.
ZUN Trustee also became an active member of the ERT (Emergency Response Team.) This cross-functional group worked tirelessly, operating round the clock for an uninterrupted 24 months. The ERT coordinated and provided vital medical support, ambulance services, and funeral assistance, extending its services not just within the city and state, but across different regions as well. Even today, the ERT continues to be a beacon of hope, tirelessly serving those in need. The fear of the pandemic had led to a blackout of common conversations and friendly chatter that encouraged me to initiate the "Town Crier," a monthly check-in platform. It was a simple yet powerful means to connect and inquire about the well-being of family, friends, and neighbours who were fighting the same fears from behind closed doors.
The pandemic reshaped our perspective on life and work, reminding us of the strength we possess when we stand together in the face of adversity.
